1. Know your skin type
Perfume generally lasts longer on well-moisturised skin. If your skin is dry, apply an unscented moisturiser before fragrance.
2. Test it on your skin
Spray the perfume on your wrist or inner arm, rather than relying only on a tester strip. Your skin's oils and chemistry can change how the fragrance smells.
3. Give it time
Don't decide immediately. A perfume develops in stages:
â˘Â   Top notes: first few minutesÂ
â˘Â   Heart notes: usually emerge after around 15â60 minutesÂ
â˘Â   Base notes: develop over several hoursÂ
A fragrance you love initially may smell very different later.
4. Test only a few at once
Try around 2â4 fragrances during one shopping trip. Too many scents can overwhelm your sense of smell.
5. Consider your natural body scent
Your skin's natural scent, sweat, skincare products and even the environment can affect how perfume smells. The best fragrance should complementânot fightâyour natural scent.
6. Choose according to your lifestyle
⢠Hot weather: citrus, fresh, aquatic and light floral fragrancesÂ
⢠Evening: amber, vanilla, oud, leather and woody fragrancesÂ
⢠Office: clean, subtle and fresh scentsÂ
⢠Special occasions: richer fragrances with stronger projectionÂ
7. Check longevity and projection
If you want something that lasts longer, look at Eau de Parfum (EDP) or Parfum/Extrait rather than automatically choosing Eau de Toilette (EDT). Concentration isn't the only factor, but it can influence longevity.
One important tip
Don't buy an expensive perfume after smelling it for just 30 seconds. Wear it for several hours first. If you still love the way it smells on your skin later in the day, you've probably found a good match.
And remember: there is no scientifically established âperfect perfume for your body chemistry.â Fragrance choice is largely personal, although skin, products, temperature and humidity can change how a perfume develops.
